The Magic of Hot Water

There is a lot of research pointing to the benefits of drinking hot water. According to the European Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research, drinking very warm water, particularly in the morning on an empty stomach, can positively impact bowel movements by aiding in digestion and potentially relieving constipation. The heat from the warm water is calming and soothing for the abdominal muscles and helps food pass through the intestines.

The heat from warm water can help relax muscles and relieve cramps or spasms in the abdomen. Hot water promotes better digestion because it creates induced thermogenics. A study that followed 14 healthy men and women found that drinking 500 ml of water before a meal (approximately 2 cups) can increase metabolism by 30%. I love this study, conducted by Michal Boschmann at the University Humboldt in Germany. Practicing healthy drinking habits can also prevent you from overeating when hungry.

Warm water during the winter months, compared to room temperature, can increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, improve bowel function, and relieve sinus congestion. Cold water can be especially aggravating. I also recommend adding some hot chicken soup to your diet to heal your respiratory tract and relieve yourself from a runny nose, cough, or chills.

Variations and Benefits

Hot Water

Drink hot water first thing in the morning, and even throughout the day to remove toxins and soothe your gut.

Lemon

Lemons contain vitamin C which produces collagen resulting in healthy skin, prevents kidney stones, and boosts immunity. Use ¼ lemon per 8 fl oz. water, sliced or squeezed

Fennel Seeds

Fennel tea helps relax the digestive muscles, reduces bloating and constipation, and produces digestive juices that break down fats. Fennel is an anti-inflammatory (contains limonene and anethole), balances hormones (phytoestrogens), and freshens breath. If you are pregnant consult with your PCP. Use ¼ tsp fennel seeds per 8 fl oz. water.

Ginger Root

Ginger helps with digestion, nausea, and inflammation, regulates blood sugar, and improves circulation. You can grate or slice your own ginger root or use tea bags. Use ½ tsp ginger per 8 fl oz. water.

Genia’s Spoon Me Tips

I start my day with a glass of boiling hot water with grated ginger root. Drinking (room temperature) water and a cup of hot water on an empty stomach is a wonderful way to clean my gut. The water runs through my system like a river – it’s a great feeling.

Before a meal, especially when I’m dining out, I always ask for a cup of hot water. At this point my husband knows to order it for me – how sweet!

Last but not least, please be mindful to check your water temperature before drinking.

Cheers to hot water!
Love, Genia
