Summer Hydrating Elixir Drink

Hydration is super important. Why? Water is required by all the organs in our body that hydrate the cells and tissues that our cells are made of. Water also helps regulate our body temperature, and boosts our energy. I keep on reminding myself to drink my water throughout the day - the day creeps up and before I know it I haven’t hydrated for hours. I’m now committed to carrying my water bottle with me wherever I go. Please keep your water bottle or glass of water near by and sip, sip., sip all day long. It’s best to drink small sips throughout the day versus gulping water all at once.

This recipe is inspired by my teacher Divya Alter who learned about this recipe from her teacher Vaidya Mishra who spoke so highly about the importance of this beverage (the ingredients speak for themselves). It’s one of the best electrolyte elixirs to quench your thirst. Thank you Divya for sharing.

Divya is an Ayurvedic master chef, book author and founder of Divya’s Kitchen in NYC. You gotta make this easy, fun, and hydrating beverage called “Ayurvedic Gatorade'“.

mis en place - ingredients for a healthy, delicious, hydrating elixir drink - makes 16 oz - 2 cups

Recipe
2 cups spring water
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
2 tsp chopped fresh mint
1 tsp maple syrup - a cooling sweetener
1/8 tsp cumin seeds - toast for a minute in skillet
2 small pinches Himalayan or Soma Salt
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)

Instructions

  • toast the cumin seeds in a small skillet over medium-low heat for 1 minute or until the aroma is released. Remove from heat and crush them in a mortar or coffee grinder

  • in a blender, briefly blend all the ingredients and strain through a cheese cloth or thin mesh. Serve at room temp - not too cold as this may interfere with your digestive fire

Genia’s Spoon Me Tips:
This drink is cooling, balancing, and everyone (all body types) can drink it throughout the year. Sip when you exercise to hydrate, and before you feel thirsty to prevent dehydration.

Soma salt is white Himalayan mineralized rock salt that cools and balances the body. The white Himalayan salt is great to use in the summer season. It can be found on line. It only grows in the mountains of northwest India. I have yet to find it in stores.

Nutmeg is optional in this elixir drink. Nutmeg helps with constipation. If needed then add to your drink for hydration and easy elimination.

Toast cumin or any seeds in a small skillet over medium-low heat for 1 minute or until they release their aroma. It’s a great way to spice up your kitchen and taste buds. The benefits of spices are huge. Check out Dr. Josh Axe on the medicinal properties of spices and herbs.

I love making these elixirs to last me a few days. I’ll be bottling them for my trip to Vermont next week, and icing them in my cooler to ‘sip’ on the road. Better be prepared than be at the mercy for drinks and snacks on the highway. And yes, I’ll be chopping up some veggies, seeds and snacks for my cooler, too.

Stay hydrated and have fun this summer,
Love Genia
